How to Host a Donation Drive for Open Doors

Looking for a hands-on way to make a difference? Hosting a donation drive is a beautiful way to gather friends, coworkers, or your faith community and directly support people experiencing homelessness.

Here’s how to get started:

Choose Your Focus

Donation drives work best when they’re specific. Consider:

  • Hygiene kits (travel-size shampoo, deodorant, toothbrushes)

  • Clothing (underwear, socks, shirts and pants)

  • Pantry staples (canned goods, coffee, protein bars)

  • Seasonal needs (bug spray and sunscreen in summer; blankets and warm hats in winter)

Check our Current Wishlist to see what’s most urgently needed.

Spread the Word

Use social media, email, or workplace newsletters. Create a simple flyer or graphic in Canva, and share why supporting Open Doors matters to you. Personal stories resonate: “I’m hosting this drive because I believe everyone deserves dignity and warmth.”

Collect & Organize

Set up a box or bin in an easy-to-reach spot. Encourage only gently used or new items. Consider labeling the box: “Help Open Doors KC create second chances.”

Deliver & Celebrate

Once collected, coordinate with us to drop off donations. We love meeting donors, sharing how your gifts will help, and snapping a photo (with your permission) to celebrate your kindness.

Why it matters:

Every item you collect becomes part of someone’s new beginning — a fresh shirt before a job interview, a warm coat on a cold night, or hygiene items that restore comfort and confidence.

Your drive doesn’t just fill shelves. It reminds our guests that their community sees them, cares, and hasn’t forgotten them.

Small acts, shared together, create real change. Thank you for helping us open doors to better futures.
