Impact Story: Aaron

At just 28 years old, Aaron Hernandez is a living testament to the strength it takes to start over.

Born and raised in Kansas City, Missouri, Aaron’s life took a difficult turn after a series of personal hardships. A toxic relationship, some poor choices, and an unexpected job loss set off a chain of events that left him without stable housing and uncertain about his future.

“I never thought I’d end up there,” Aaron says. “You don’t realize how fast things can fall apart until they do.”

But Aaron’s story didn’t end in struggle. With the help of Open Doors Foundation, he found not only shelter and stability, but a path toward healing and growth. Through our programs, he’s gained access to job readiness training, mentorship, and emotional support that have helped him regain his confidence and rebuild his life with intention and positivity.

Today, Aaron is focused on his future. He’s actively giving back by encouraging others facing similar challenges to seek help and never give up. Operations Manager, Lyla Lane states,"Aaron is a positive influence for our other guests and an asset to Open Doors."

“I’m not where I want to be yet—but I’m not where I was. And I’m grateful everyday for a second chance.”

Aaron’s journey reminds us why our mission matters. At Open Doors Foundation, we believe every person deserves a safe place to land—and a real chance to rise. Each person has the potential for everything in their life to turn upside down at a moment’s notice, and we are here to help lift people into what they deserve: a positive outlook on life.
