What to Expect When Volunteering at Open Doors
You’ve signed up to volunteer at Open Doors Foundation KC — thank you! But maybe you’re wondering: What exactly will I do? Will it be awkward? What if I say the wrong thing?
Here’s what to expect — and why volunteering often changes you as much as it changes the community.
A warm welcome
When you arrive, our volunteer coordinator will greet you, give you a tour, and share a brief orientation. You'll learn about our mission as a low-barrier shelter and the importance of dignity and choice in every guest interaction.
Simple but meaningful tasks
Depending on the day, you might:
Sort clothing donations
Assemble hygiene kits
Serve meals or pour coffee
Help clean or organize shared spaces
You don’t need special skills — just compassion and an open heart.
Connection matters most
The tasks are important, but conversation is often the real gift. Many volunteers find their most memorable moments come from simple chats:
Remembering a guest’s name
Asking how someone’s day was
Sharing a laugh or encouraging word
These small interactions build trust and remind guests they’re seen and valued.
Feelings are normal
It’s okay to feel nervous, emotional, or unsure. Homelessness can feel overwhelming, but showing up matters. You won’t be alone — staff and veteran volunteers will guide you.
You’ll likely leave changed
Volunteers often share: “I thought I was there to help others, but I ended up learning more about kindness, resilience, and what really matters.”

Wear comfortable clothes, bring an open mind, and remember: perfection isn’t required — presence is.
